Literature Text

"Blah, blah, blah. Daughter of the king...Kidnapped by goblins after birth to be used to gain power later in life...Knight in shinning armor comes over the crest of the sunset hill, riding upon his valiant steed..." I read aloud to myself as I walked the country road to the Rose Field Kingdom.

Mister Head Writer hadn't given me much notice about preparing for my story, so I had set off nearly immediately after leaving his office, with one more final stop by home. A tear-filled good-bye was inevitable, but everyone has to grow up someday.

Due to my lack of time, I read my new life's rough script as I traveled. I was also reading it aloud, it's always helped me memorize things. At time I munched some berries I'd packed for the short trip in between sentences. Always being careful not to speak with food in my mouth. Even when no one was around, I had trained myself to always act like a lady, even if it was sometimes difficult. It was all those little details like that that had gotten me where I was now.

Where I was now...

That beautiful sentence rang again and again in my mind. I couldn't get over the fact that I was living my dream. As of right now, because as I thought that through again I entered the Rose Field Kingdom's gates.

This was now my kingdom.

I couldn't have been happier as I started down the cobblestone roads of the kingdom. I knew the smile on my face was probably looked almost like that of a crazy person, but I really didn't care. Nothing could ruin this completely perfect day!

For today, everyone would was preparing for the story to begin tomorrow. Because starting then, any and everything that happened was fair game to be told to the people of Earth. You see, the story tellers who bring you the stories are known to be extremely mischievous. They love to put emphasis on flaws or mess ups, saying it gives the story "character."

Navigating the crowds of people, I carefully made my way across the main street of merchants. Most of them where still setting up their carts and shops for the first time, but one of them, a cart that sat nearby, seemed to be in business already.

The merchant had his back to me, talking to another female customer who appeared to be slightly younger than myself. He, on the other hand, looked to be about my age. Dressed in black and grey, his dark brown hair fell over a piece of red clothe he had tied around his forehead.

I couldn't really see his face, but for the moment it didn't matter. So I slid my silky sash off my shoulders and hung it over my arm so I could better examine the handmade items at the cart.

The inventory at the cart seemed to consist of odds and ends, from bags to scarves, and satchels to sandals.

"Can I help you?"

The sudden voice caused me to jerk my head up from browsing and come face to face with the young merchant.

He lazily rested one arm on the side of the cart and didn't even seem to care that his hair was most likely obscuring his vision greatly. He was obviously going for a young, rugged, handsome look.

In my opinion, he looked like he just needed a hair cut.

"No, I'm just looking. Thanks anyway." I hoped the last part didn't sound too hurried, but I wasn't overly eager to talk to this guy as it was.

"Suit yourself." He shrugged his shoulders and took a step back.

I was nearly finished looking around and preparing to get moving again. As I looked up again I caught sight of the scruffy boy showing off some handmade scarf to yet another girl.

I guess you could say he had some certain appeal to him. Though, the way girls seemed to come to the cart for him as much as the items still seemed pretty frivolous to me.

Then, the wind kicked up and the thin scarf slipped from Scruffy's grasp. It blew right past me and into the open street.

The next thing I remember was dirt and dust.

And I was on my hands and knees in it.

"HEY!" I shouted at the same time Scruffy half apologized for knocking me over as he kept after the scarf.

"Sorry, but hey, you COULD have grabbed it!" He called over his shoulder.

"Of all the nerve." I mumbled as I stood up.

Usually, I'm a very level headed and sensible girl. Keeping my cool and always thinking things through. But right now, something possessed me to follow that mad-man on his quest to save the scarf. Maybe it was the fact that I wasn't very happy with him, or maybe I just wanted to see if he could do it.

Brushing the dust off me as I tried to keep up with him, I soon realized that was a nearly impossible task. He dodged and weaved through the streets with ease, jumping over or side stepping past any obstacle. Maybe I could have done those things too, but a dress tends to get in the way of doing things like leaping over watermelon carts.

While I was halfway through the crowded street, he was already climbing up the side of a building. With a quick glance upward I could see the scarf snagged on a flagpole on top of said building.

"Wait up!" I called without thinking as I tried to follow him.

"Wait for what now?" He skidded to a stop right before he reached the scarf and looked down to see me, by this point I was out of the crowd and trying to find a way up the building.

I wasn't exactly sure myself, but I quickly located a ladder around the other side and scrambled up it. Once I was up I found myself on the same building as Scruffy and the scarf.

"Why was I waiting again?" He raised an eyebrow at me.

"I...I came to see if could help." From that moment on, that was the reason I told even myself why I'd followed him.

"Not much to help with." He smiled

His smile faded as he turned around to see the scarf, yet again, caught by the wind. It was now blowing across the other side of the street and over the next row of houses and shops.

"Blast it!" He scowled. "Some help you are."

"A second ago you implied there was nothing I could-!" I started, but stopped as he suddenly grabbed my own sash that was still resting over my arm.

"Mind if I borrow this? Thanks." This time his smile held a bit of sarcasm as he started to run toward the edge of the flat rooftop.

"Are you CRAZY?!?" I exclaimed.

This man was insane. I was pretty sure he was going to try to jump the distance of another street. All this for a scarf? And what was he going to use my sash for?

Then again, maybe he did have a clue what he was doing, because even though he DID jump, he obviously had a plan.

When he jumped I finally noticed a banner hanging between our rooftop and the one the scarf had now taken residence upon. He used my sash to turn the banner into his own personal zip-line. And then jumped off at the end and snatched up his scarf once and for all.

"You know," he said in response to my earlier question. "That's entirely possible."

Before I could say anything else, bell chimes played in the distance, getting increasingly louder as they announced the time of day.

"Oh, no!" I immediately started back down the ladder I'd used to reach the rooftop in the first place. "I'm running late!"

"Late for what? Maybe I can help you." He offered.

"It's okay." I called as I hopped off the ladder and started down the street. "I'm not even quite sure where I'm going. Good bye!"

He shouted something else after me, but in the noise of the crowd I couldn't hear him.

Honestly, I wasn't that sure I cared to hear him. As horrible as that may sound, he was obviously a very careless person, if not partly insane as even he admitted.
