Chapter 6

"Where to now?" Manic kicked an empty soda can along the lonely dirt path that took himself and Clipsy farther away from Station Square.

"Who knows? I'm not sure how much I trust most of our 'friends'." Clipsy's face fell a tad bit.

"I've known them for years!" Manic protested.

"Do you think they'd even hesitate to stab you in the back if it meant any amount of money?"

For a moment, Manic closed his eyes and bit his lower lip in thought. Partly trying to think of a way to admit she was right without really admitting he'd been wrong.

"Okay, you got me. The only ones who would have stuck with me have either 'gone goodie' on me or they're right next to me."

There, a slight compliment should keep her from putting it in his face that she was right.

"I'd say the 'gone goodies' would have believed us, but I'm pretty sure they all left the area. The others would just hand us in for hope of a reward."

"They'd be more likely to hand us over to that lizard guy we met yesterday, him and whoever that "Boss" he mentioned is."

"Oh, him." A shiver ran up Clipsy's spine. "I'd rather never see him again."

"I'm not sure if we can avoid it."

Clipsy remain silent for a moment. Even though she didn't know it, Manic was also thinking about how their lives may have just been changed forever.

"Just passed the city limits. Don't know when we'll see home again." Manic said, trying to sound excited.

"Just you and me...Versus the world."

"Awww. How touching." A new and strange voice filled with mockery flowed in the air.

Before either teen could answer, a pair of leather boots slid down from the branches of a nearby tree. Followed, of course, by the rest of the newcomer.

"So very sweet. Determined to stand by each other and blah blah blah." The girl's brow lowered into a scowl over her blood red eyes.

"And just who do you think you are?" Manic crossed his arms over his chest. He was about fed up with unannounced villains.

"Locket. Locket the Kat. Known assassin. That's the REAL meaning of infamous, kiddies." She slowly reached toward her jeans pocket.

"What happened to the lizard?"

"Slime? That idiot would try to kill a fish by drowning it." Locket scoffed. "Now, unfortunately for you, unlike him, I don't sit around discussing plans. So farewell!"

With that, Locket pulled out her Chaos Emerald.

While she drew a breath and the other two gasped, something came flying through the air and knocked the jewel out of her hand.

"Idiot, huh?" Slime shouted from behind.

"YOU!" Locket turned on her heels and snapped at the lizard. "What are YOU doing here?!?"

"Getting my job back." With a determined look on his face, the lizard approached.

"So you think YOU are going to out do ME?" Locket put one hand on her hip and blew her hair out of her face. "Very funny."

"Oh, yeah?"

While the two would-be killers argued with their back to the others, Manic seized the moment.

"Let's scat, quick!" He hissed as he slowly began moving in the other direction.

"Let's grab the Chaos Emerald first." Clipsy suggested in equally low tones as she began to move toward the red gem that was on the ground not too far from them.

"We're not taking that chance." Manic whisper and pulled her along by the wrist before she could protest. After taking a few steps backwards they broke into a run, heading far away from Slime and Locket.

"Look, Slime, we don't have time for this. Just let me finish my job and I'll put in a good word with Chief on your behalf."

With that, the kat turned around again, only to find her victims had obviously gotten away.

"THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!" She shouted, charging at Slime and grabbing him by the nape of the neck.

"MY fault? Oh, yeah right!"

"OH COURSE IT IS! THEY'D BE DEAD IF YOU HADN'T KNOCKED THE EMERELD OUT OF MY HANDS!" She shook the lizard violently before a realization hit her and she exclaimed. "My emerald!"

"It's right over there, don't get your boots in a twist."

"You shut up!" Locket threw Slime to the ground and ran to retrieve her weapon.



"Do you think they're following us?" Clipsy asked, gathering what breath she could while running.

"I don't think so." Manic struggled to talk and run on the sand they'd come upon at the same time.

"Where are we?"

"No clue. Obviously some sort of beach."

"Oh, really? I never would have guessed." The squirrel rolled her eyes.

"There's a beach shack up ahead. We should probably steer clear of it." Manic ignored his friend's sarcastic remark.

"I think so-Hey, I've seen that surf board before! The one on the porch!"

"Clips, there's a million like it in the world." Now it was the hedgehog's turn to roll his eyes.

"Not with customized frog footprints and a name on them!" She smiled and ran up ahead.

As she ran up to the shack, someone inside saw her out the window and came running out as well.

"CLIPSY? Is that you or have I gone wacko?" A blue and yellow poison dart frog called as she rushed out the front door.

"The one and only!" Clipsy met and quickly hugged her long time friend. "I thought you where gone training for surfing competitions this summer!"

"Pfftt, I bailed on that. I can learn all of that from the comfort of my new shack, by the beach side. It's also closer to Station Square, so I was planning to drop in and surprise you sometime soon. What are you doing out here, anyway?"

"It's a long story, Splash." The other girl's face fell a little and she addressed the frog by her name.

"Then come inside, have some kool-aid." Splash smiled then waved at the other approaching Mobian. "Hey, Manic!"

"Yo, Splash! Long time, no see!"

"Totally! We've all got some catching up to do!"
